Summary
A generic introductory course intended for those who wish to learn how to use a Mediational Approach to Teaching and Learning, particularly appropriate for supporting A Curriculum for Excellence.
Full description
Clinical observations over decades have shown that the development of thinking processes is highly dependent on the nature and quality of the interaction within which selected stimuli are mediated by parents and educators.
This course and the parenting course provide support for the same learning objectives and allow teachers and parents to work collaboratively to promote optimal learning in their children/students.
This is a generic course, designed for educators from across all education sectors. As such, it does not concentrate on any one stage of learning or area of the curriculum but is appropriate for teachers, lecturers, psychologists, early years practitioners and support staff working in Nursery, Primary, Secondary, Special, Community schools and Further Education. Participants will develop their ability to use Feuerstein's parameters of mediated learning and cognitive functions (tools of thinking) to facilitate thinking and learning in children and young people and to improve their development as successful learners, confident individuals, responsible citizens and effective contributors.
The aims of the course include:
- Understanding the importance of the 'mediator' in a young person's cognitive learning and social and emotional development.
- Understanding how Mediated Learning Experiences (MLE) can improve teaching, learning and behaviour.
- Understanding a systemic approach to empower educators to prepare students for learning in the 21st century.
- Understanding how to use Feuerstein's parameters of mediated learning to develop cognitive functions (tools of thinking) in order to address the four capacities of Curriculum for Excellence.
Clinical observations over decades have shown that the development of thinking processes is highly dependent on the nature and quality of the interaction within which selected stimuli are mediated by parents and educators.
Based on Feuerstein's theory and methodology, this course offers a visionary way forward to address many of the current agenda issues today, including, Curriculum for Excellence, Looked After Children, Early Intervention and Family Support, Life-Long Learning and Anti-Social Behaviour.
The course will explore:
- improving learning and teaching;
- raising motivation and achievement;
- promoting inclusion and equality;
- improving behaviour and discipline through learning;
- working with parents and carers to equip pupils with the pre-requisite skills for formal, social and life-long learning.
Comments from recent research in Scotland include: "These teachers support the continuance of the programme and the implementation of a mediated learning approach throughout the schools". "They believe that the Feuerstein version of mediated learning is likely to enhance the aims of other initiatives (e.g. Curriculum for Excellence; Assessment is for Learning) and contribute to National Priorities".
